案浦家　次男　泰は、2024 年 6 月 27 日に米国海軍兵学校に入学しました。この日は「I-Day」と呼ばれ、Induction Day の略です。この学校に通う人は「士官候補生」と呼ばれ、1 年目の士官候補生は「新入生」と呼ばれます。新入生は I-Day に士官学校での生活を開始し、7 週間の厳しい訓練が始まります。彼らはこれを「新入生の夏」と呼んでいます。午前 7 時 15 分にチェックインした後、山のような書類を提出し、髪を刈り上げ、すべての装備とユニフォームと靴を支給され、メガネを合わせ、壮大なバンクロフト ホール内の寮の部屋を割り当てられました。バンクロフト ホールはフランスが設計した世界最大の寮で、4,400 人の士官候補生全員が住んでいます。内部には 5 マイル近くの廊下があります。攻とスーザンは、午後 6 時の正式な宣誓式まで、いくつかのツアー、保護者向け説明会、保護者向けピクニック、教会の礼拝に参加しました。宣誓式の後、泰の制服姿を、そしてバンクロフト ホールに戻るまでの約 30 分間を見ることができました。そこでは、新入生 1,187 名全員が行進して戻り、2 つの大きな木製のドアがバタンと閉まりました (伝統に従ったものです)。2028 年度のクラスには 15,146 名の応募者がおり、今年のクラスの規模は 1,170 名 + 17 名の留学生でした。69% が男性で、31% が女性です。泰は今後、 6 週間で 2 回電話ができ、8 月 9 日から 11 日までの新入生保護者ウィークエンドにまた会う予定です。それまでは、私たちは泰に手紙を書き、彼と新しいクラスメートのすべてがうまくいくように祈ります。

Our second son Ty entered the U.S. Naval Academy on June 27, 2024. This day is called “I-Day” which is short for Induction Day. People who attend the Academy are called ‘midshipmen’ and first year midshipmen are called ‘plebes’. The Plebes begin their life at the Academy on I-Day, when their 7 weeks of hard training begins. They call this “Plebe Summer”. After Ty checked in at 7:15am, he turned in mountains of paperwork, got his hair buzzed off, was issued all his gear and uniforms and shoes, got fitted for glasses, and was assigned his dorm room inside the mighty Bancroft Hall. Bancroft Hall is a French designed dormitory, the largest in the world, and houses all 4,400 midshipmen. It has nearly 5 miles worth of hallways inside! Koh and Susan attended some tours, a parents briefing, a parents picnic, and a church service until the formal swearing in ceremony at 6pm. After the ceremony, we were able to see Ty in uniform for about 30 minutes before he had to report back to Bancroft Hall, where all 1,187 plebes marched back in and the two big wooden doors were slammed shut (according to tradition). The Class of 2028 had 15,146 applicants and this year’s class size was 1,170 + 17 International. 69% are male and 31% are female. Ty will get two phone calls to us in the next 6 weeks and we will get to see him during Plebe Parents Weekend, August 9-11. Until then, we will write him letters and pray that all goes well for him and his new classmates!

The big news in the Annoura family is that Ty went into the U.S. Naval Academy on June 27. Details of that experience warranted its own article in this week’s newsletter! As a parent, Koh and I are of course proud of him for getting accepted, but we are also sad that he has left us. As much as people say it’s normal to grow up and leave home at 18, having our family count go to three (from five) is going to be a whole new dynamic. Right before Ty entered the Academy, we allowed him to go on a trip to Japan with three of his good friends: Jack, Zayan, and Addison. The four of them flew into Narita, bought a JR Rail Pass, and traveled all throughout Tokyo, Hakone, Kyoto, Osaka, and Fukuoka. Seeing some of the pictures, I know they had an incredible trip and made many lifelong memories. I’m actually writing today’s newsletter on an airplane, as Koh and I fly back from Annapolis. I am wondering how we will feel in the coming days and weeks; my emotions are all over the place. After leaving Ty, we decided to stay in Maryland for a couple extra days. We drove west and found a historical town called Frostburg. There is a company called Tracks and Yaks that runs rail cycle/kayak activities. It is something I have always wanted to try and it was just what we needed to get over some of our sad feelings and reset our minds. Lots of changes on the horizon with Koh leaving for Japan this week (July 3) to join Zach. He’s spoken to the Hakata Elementary School PTA to allow him to help out with Kodomo Yamakasa, an annual festival for kids in his hometown. Meanwhile, Zach is enjoying his time in Japan, still attending school and living his best life. He posted up a video of him enjoying “Shine Muscat” grapes that he bought for a whopping $15 (Zach!). Over in Los Angeles, Joe is plugging away at his investment banking internship. Last week, the team started meeting a few times a week at a spot inside UCLA. On the weekends, Joe has been enjoying his newest past time of thrifting, hitting the Goodwill bins, garage sales, and estate sales. This past weekend, he actually sold some of his treasured finds at a flea market he said, splitting the booth with a couple of new friends he has recently made. Oh the life of young people!

• Mortgage rates have doubled to over 7% since the Fed raised interest rates in 2022.
• At a rate of 7%, the median monthly mortgage payment for a $392,200 home is roughly $2,800, near a record high, according to a Redfin analysis. At a rate of 3%, that monthly payment would be close to $1,800.
• This makes buying a home less affordable, with monthly payments for a median-priced home nearly double what they were at 3% rates, according to a Redfin analysis.
• Historically, 6% mortgage rates are normal, but very low rates during the pandemic spoiled many buyers.
• Fannie Mae doesn’t expect rates to return to 3% in our lifetimes but predicts a more normal range of 4.5% to 6% in the coming years.

Fannie Mae forecasts rates to fall below 7% as early as the start of next year, with home price growth also slowing down.

For Koh and Susan’s 30 year anniversary, they decided to go somewhere they have never been, and since they were short on time, they picked a place that was tropical, not too far, and reachable by Southwest Airlines (they love Hobby Airport!). Have you ever heard of the island of Aruba? It is off the coast of Venezuela. Southwest flies through Orlando in order to reach there. Aruba is actually a part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands! It is only 20 miles from the north tip to the south tip and at it’s widest, it is only 6 miles across. There are two official languages there: Dutch (sole language for all admin and legal matters) and Papiamento (spoken language by the locals) but everyone also speaks perfect English and Spanish. Incredibly, all kids learn FOUR languages growing up in their education system! If you go to Aruba, we highly recommend all the things we did: take an all day tour with ABC Tours Aruba, do a private Seabob snorkel trip with Tio1 Adventure Aruba, rent a car and visit all the different beautiful beaches, watch the sunset from the northern tip, stay at the Embassy Suites Aruba. ABC Tours will bring you to all the major sightseeing spots: the lighthouse, the natural bridge, the gold milling fort, the first Dutch church, into the National Park to see the caves and to swim in the Conchi Natural Pool. They will also serve you lunch during the tour and bring you snorkeling at Baby Beach. Highly recommended! Tio 1 Adventure will guide you on your own Seabob to see the sea turtles and all kinds of tropical fish. We were lucky to even see a manta ray swim by! In total, we were there for 5 days and 4 nights, which was plenty of time to catch all the major sights plus relax at our resort by the beautiful pool. If you have never been to Aruba, put it on your list of places to visit next to Turks and Caicos!
