今年もそんな時期がやってきました！秋が近づき（この猛暑では秋とは思えませんが）、地元の学校は次々に学校開始となっています。ヒューストン地域の公立学校は時差スケジュールで始まり、一部は今週、一部は来週からとなっています。地域の買い物客は毎年恒例の免税週末を利用して地元のお店に殺到し、学用品、衣類、リュックサックを買い込んで新学期の準備を行います。学校に戻るときは、新たな熱意を抱く時期です。新しい学年になるたびに、新しいクラス、新しい先生、そして新しい夢が生まれます。サッカー、バレーボール、クロスカントリーなどの秋のスポーツの新しいシーズンが始まります。アスリートたちは再び自分のスキルを披露する機会を得ることになります。

大学でも準備を始めています。他州の大学に子供を連れて帰ってくる友人もいますし、案浦家も今週末丈をUTに連れて帰る予定です。子どもたちは大きな夢を持ち、大学の学位にどんどん近づいています。これは、彼らの寮の部屋 (丈の場合は、初めてのキャンパス外のアパート!) を飾るチャンスです。

学校に戻ると、また夏が終わりに近づいていることがわかります。休暇、アクティビティ、達成感などの思い出がたくさんある夏は、それぞれに特別なものです。全体として、彼らがどの学年に戻るかは関係なく、雰囲気は常に希望に満ちていて刺激的なものです。

2023 ～ 2024 学年度、子供たちみんながいい生活となることを祈ります。

It’s that time of year again! Fall is approaching (although it doesn’t feel like it with this heat wave) and local schools are returning to classes. Public schools in the Houston area begin on a staggered schedule with some opening this week and others next week.  Area shoppers flood local retailers to take advantage of the annual tax free weekend to stock up on school supplies, clothing and backpacks to start the new year off right! Back to school is a time for renewed enthusiasm. New classes, new teachers, and new dreams come with every new school year. New seasons for Fall sports like football, volleyball and cross country are starting. Athletes will get the chance to show off their skills once again.

Even colleges are getting ready to head back. We have friends bringing their kids back to college in other states and even the Annouras will bring Joe back to UT this weekend. There’s a buzz among those headed back to university as well. Kids have big dreams and move closer and closer to that college degree. This is their chance to decorate their dorm room (or in Joe’s case, his first off campus apartment!). 

Back to school also signals another summer coming to an end. Full of memories of vacations, activities, and accomplishments, each summer is special in its own way.  All in all it doesn’t matter which level they’re going back to, the vibe is always hopeful and exciting!

7月31日から8月2日まで、スーザンと泰はコロラド州デンバー近くのコロラド・スクール・オブ・マインズへ短期間旅行し、大学見学を兼ねてレスリングのコーチに会いに行きました。この大学は工学系の学校であり、素晴らしい場所にあります。キャンパスツアーだけでなく、川で浮き輪に乗りながら流れたり、レッド ロックス野外劇場を訪れたりしました。 3日間のレスリングキャンプにも参加しました！ そして3ヶ月ぶりに案浦家が全員集合しました！丈は丸3か月を福岡で過ごした後、8月3日についに帰国しました。週に5日、1日4時間の日本語の授業を受け、日本人の彼女と時間を過ごしたことで、彼の日本語はかなり上達したと思います。ザックは先週の月曜日、親友のユウトを訪ねるために東京へ行きました。二人はクライミングウォールやトランポリンパーク、空中障害物コースなどがあるテーマパークに行きました。ウォータースライダーやレースレーンのあるプールでも楽しい時間を過ごし、富士山のすぐそばの温泉にも行きました！当初の計画では、攻は木曜日に東京に飛び、ザックと会い、その後一緒にヒューストンに戻る予定だったのですが、台風の影響でフライトがキャンセルとなり、ザックは一人でアメリカに帰国することになりました。結局2日後の土曜日に攻は帰国となりました。スーザンと息子３人は、ヒューストン オークス カントリー クラブでスーザンのお兄さん、ロブとその家族と家族旅行に行きました。彼らはプールサイドで寝そべり、スタンドアップパドルを体験し、夕食後には従兄弟全員７人でビリヤードやテキサスホールデムをして楽しく過ごしました。午前中、グループの半分は釣り大会に参加し（泰と彼のいとこサムが優勝しました！）、残りの半分は18ホールのゴルフをしました。スーザンは2バーディーと好成績を残しました！旅行中、攻は帰国後すぐに、みんなと会うために 昼食に間に合うようUberで合流しました。とても楽しい家族旅行となり、沢山お話ができた良い旅となりました。今週末、丈はオースティンに戻って大学 2 年生生活をスタートする予定、ザックとタイは 8 月 22 日から新学年生活開始予定です。

From July 31 to Aug 2, Susan and Ty took a quick trip to Colorado School of Mines near Denver, Colorado to meet the wrestling coach and check out the school. Located in Golden, Colorado, the school is an engineering school and the location is absolute gorgeous. While there, they not only visited the campus, but they also floated the river rapids and visited the Red Rocks Amphitheater. Ty also attended a 3 day wrestling camp! After 3 summer months, all the Annouras are back in Houston! Joe flew home on August 3 after spending 3 full months in Fukuoka. We think his Japanese has improved quite a bit after taking Japanese class 5 days a week for 4 hours a day AND spending time with his Japanese girlfriend. Zach flew to Tokyo last Monday to visit his good friend Yuto. The two of them went to a theme park that had a climbing wall, trampoline park, and an aerial obstacle course.  They also visited a swimming facility with a water slide and race lanes. After that, they went to a hot spring right next to Mount Fuji! The initial plan was for Koh to fly to Tokyo on Thursday, meet Zach, and then fly back to Houston together. But, a typhoon affected Koh’s flight from Fukuoka so he could not go to Tokyo, resulting in Zach having to fly home all by himself! Koh ended up flying back two days later on Saturday. Susan and her 3 boys met up with Susan’s brother Rob and his family at Houston Oaks Country Club. They laid out by the pool, checked out the stand up paddles, had dinner, and then all 7 cousins spent the evening playing billiards and Texas Hold’em.  In the morning, half the group entered a fishing tournament (Ty and his cousin Sam won first place!) while the other half played 18 holes of golf.  Susan made TWO birdies! During the trip, Koh flew in from Tokyo and took an Uber to meet everyone for lunch. It was a fun time between the two families and a great time to catch up. This weekend, Joe goes back to Austin to start year 2 of University of Texas, while Zach and Ty start school on August 22.

Some of the nation’s largest insurance companies such as State Farm and Allstate have ceased writing policies in states with the highest natural disaster risks, for example, California, Florida, Colorado, and Louisiana. The insurance division of AAA said recently that it would not renew policies in Florida that it considered had “higher exposure,” and Farmers stated that it will not offer new policies in Florida and will not renew thousands of existing policies in part because of increasing losses from hurricanes. Millions of homeowners across the country now must find different kinds of coverage, which are usually more expensive and cover less. If people have a mortgage on the property, then the mortgage company almost always requires insurance. The United States is “marching steadily towards an uninsurable future,” says Dave Jones, a law professor at the University of California, Berkeley and the state’s former insurance commissioner. This will impact lending, construction, and real estate overall. In Colorado and Texas, the average cost of home insurance has increased by about 40 percent since 2015, and Florida has seen a 57 percent increase during the same period. In 2021, Chubb said it was scaling back writing policies in areas of California that were even moderately exposed to wildfire risks. AIG, State Farm, Farmers, and Allstate followed Chubb’s lead. With the global heat wave continuing, temperatures are reaching a point that will make climate impacts like heat and storms much more destructive. The takeaway: Expect higher and higher insurance premiums when purchasing homes, qualifying for loans, and at renewal time.

Just 1% of U.S. Homes Have Changed Hands This Year, the Lowest Share in at Least a Decade

Roughly 14 of every 1,000 U.S. homes changed hands during the first six months of 2023, according to a new report from Redfin (redfin.com), the technology-powered real estate brokerage. That’s down from 19 of every 1,000 during the same period of 2019 and the lowest turnover rate in at least a decade. What does this mean?  Sellers are not selling, they are holding on to their homes. House hunters searching for large homes in the suburbs have seen the biggest drop in their options. Just about 16 of every 1,000 four-bedroom-plus suburban single-family homes sold in the first half of this year, down from 24 of every 1,000 that sold in the same period in 2019. That means buyers of 4BR single family homes in the suburbs, have 33% fewer houses to choose from. Smaller houses in the city actually have an even lower turnover rate. Roughly 11 of every 1,000 two- and three-bedroom single-family homes in urban neighborhoods sold in the first six months of 2023. This means compared to last year (which was 14 out of every 1000), there just aren’t many 2BR-3BR homes available to buy in most of the major cities in America right now.

仕事、家族、ロデオで大忙しのスーザンは、先週泰のレスリングトーナメントを観戦するため、カナダのカルガリーから直接ノースダコタ州ファーゴに3日半の旅行をしました。 スーザンがファーゴを訪れるのは今回で2度目でとなり、昨年も同じトーナメントに訪れました。 ファーゴに行くことがある人は、ダウンタウンにある可愛いお店やブティックが沢山あり、地元の人々がコンサートやパフォーマンスを楽しめる広場など楽しんでみてはいかがですか？ ダウンタウンの真ん中にあるジャスパー ホテルはオススメの滞在先です。 1階にはRosewildという素敵なレストランがあり、農場から食卓までの食事を提供しています。 オススメメニューはリブアイです。薪で焼いたレンガのオーブンで焼いていて、とても美味しいです。 今回は時間がなかったので訪問できませんでしたが、近くのミネソタ州ムーアヘッドにはヒジェムコムストセンターというとても有名な博物館もあります。 このセンターは 1985 年にオープンし、非常に印象的なバイキング船ヒェムコムストの本拠地として機能しています。 来年も泰がファーゴの試合に参加する際に訪問する予定です！

Juggling real estate, kids, and the rodeo, Susan hopped over to Fargo, ND for 3.5 days directly from Calgary Canada to watch Ty’s wrestling tournament last week. This was Susan’s second time to visit Fargo, because she also went there last year to watch Ty in the same tournament. If you ever go to Fargo, the downtown is very cute with many shops and boutiques and an open space for the local people to enjoy concerts and performances. The best hotel is the Jasper Hotel, right in the middle of downtown.  There is an excellent restaurant on the first floor called Rosewild, which offers a farm-to-table dining experience.  If you go, order the ribeye, which they cook inside a wood fired brick oven and is absolutely amazing! Although I did not have time to visit this time, there is also a very famous museum in nearby Moorehead, Minnesota called the Hjemkomst Center. This Center opened in 1985 and serves as a home to a very impressive Hjemkomst Viking Ship! If Ty wrestles at Fargo again next year, I plan to go check it out!
