現在、ヒューストンはロデオで大盛り上がりです！2月28日に開幕し、ヒューストン、テキサス、アメリカ、そして世界各地から観光客が訪れている中、最初の8日間は海外からのゲストのために特別なプログラムが用意されています。スーザンは今年初めて、ヒューストン・ロデオの国際委員会の部門副委員長を務め、8日間で109カ国から約3000人のゲストを歓迎しました。国際家畜会議と呼ばれる講演会や、アグサミットでの牛の審査、舞踏会や、リバーオークスカントリークラブでの女性ファッションショーとランチ、リライアントセンターの上の国際本部では、マリアッチバンド、ワインの試飲会、ラインダンス、スノーコーン、アイスクリームサンデー、巨大チャーシューテーブル、ロデオ券抽選、タコスバーなど多くのイベントが行われました。このプログラムに参加する海外からのゲストの多くは、牛や精液、胚を購入するため、ベンダーやクライアントに会うため、あるいは世界中の牧場主たちと出会い、ネットワークを構築するために毎年訪れます。多くのゲストをもてなすために委員会や運営チームは懸命にボランティアする中、ゲストと楽しくも過ごしました。毎年楽しみにしていますが、今年は特に最高の年だったと思います。また、ゲストの皆さんのために食べ物を寄付し、貢献してくれた地元のレストランの皆さん、本当にありがとうございました。そして、おもてなしとボランティアをしてくれた委員会の皆さん、本当にありがとうございました。最後に、ロデオのインターナショナル・デイズに参加するためにヒューストンを訪れてくれたすべての来場者に感謝します。

The Houston Rodeo is in full swing right now. It kicked off Feb 28 and visitors from all over Houston, Texas, the United States, and the WORLD come to enjoy it. The rodeo has a special program for its international guests and the program runs for the first 8 days of rodeo. For the first time, Susan was a division vice chairman for the Houston Rodeo’s International Committee. Together with her committee, they welcomed nearly 3000 guests from 109 countries over 8 days. There was a lecture series called the International Livestock Congress, a cattle judging contest at the Ag Summit, a beautiful evening gala, a ladies fashion show and luncheon at River Oaks Country Club, and many activities in at the international headquarters above Reliant Center: a mariachi band, wine tasting sessions, line dancing, snow cones, ice cream sundaes, a HUGE Charcuterie table, rodeo ticket drawings, taco bars, etc. Many of the international guests who participate in the program come every year to do business, to buy cattle or semen or embryos, or to meet vendors and clients, or to learn and network with other ranchers from around the world. It is a beautiful program and a lot of work and effort for the committeemen and management team to host so many guests, but it is so much fun and meaningful. I look forward to it every year and I think this was the best year yet! A big thank you also to all the local restaurants who donated and contributed food to feed everyone! A big thank you to all the committeemen for all the hospitality and time put forth. And finally, a big thank you to all the visitors who traveled to Houston to participate in the Rodeo’s International Days!

2月17、18日は高校レスリングの州総体でした。テキサス州各地域の中で上位 4 人のレスラーが州のトップを目指して戦いました。前回のニュースレターでお話ししたように、高校生は同じ規模の学校の子供たちとマッチします。そのため、クリア レイク高校のような 2225 人以上の生徒がいる大規模な高校に通う子供たちは、6A という大規模なカテゴリで争います。テキサスでは、 4 つの地域に分割し、各地域内には 4 つの学区があり、各学区内には最大12校の学校があります。例えば、ケイティはリージョン3 地区9であり、ケイティ地区内だけでも10校あります。 クリアレイク高校は、リージョン3内 地区12、合計8校あります。州内のトップレスラーが集まる試合を２つか間見続けた結果、数々の素晴らしいマッチを見ることができました。アレンやロックウォールなどのダラス地区、さらにはイーストウッドやケイティ高校、オースティンのドリッピング スプリングスやベイダーグリフトなどのエルパソ地区、そしてウッドランズ カレッジパークまで、強豪ぞろいの試合となりました。 スーザンの次男、泰は126ポンド階級のリージョナル チャンピオンとして、州総体に参加しましたが、残念ながらエルパソ高校との試合に敗れました。次は、敗者側のブラケットに送られ、3位または5位の座を狙うために再度戦います。1日目は３試合中2試合勝ち、2 日目に挑む結果となりました。2日目は、1試合目無事勝利、 3位のチャンスをつかみましたが、その後、エルパソ高校との再戦となり敗北する結果となりました。 まだ5位になるチャンスがある泰はもう１試合挑みましたが、最終ブザーでも相手に 2ポイント取られ結果6位となりました。いろいろなことが学べる結果となった2日間でしたが、泰がテキサス州6A内で6位になれたことを誇りに思います。今年の目標はメダルを獲得することだったため、目標達成できてよかったです。

February 17-18 was the pinnacle of high school wrestling. It was the Texas state championships where the top four wrestlers in each region go to wrestle for the top spots in the state! As we talked about in our last newsletter, high school kids compete against kids in similar sized schools. So kids that go to a large high school of over 2225 students, like Clear Lake High School, have to compete in the large high school category, which is 6A. In Texas, UIL divides the state into four regions and inside each region is four districts, and inside each district can be up to 12 schools! See the chart above. Katy for example, is district 9 inside region 3 and inside Katy’s district alone is 10 different high schools. Clear Lake High School is in district 12 inside region 3 and has 8 different schools. From watching all the top wrestlers in the state over two days, we saw some amazing talent. Dallas areas like Allen and Rockwall and even El Paso areas like Eastwood as well as Katy High School and Austin’s Dripping Springs and Vadergrift, even the Woodlands College Park- all had extremely tough wrestlers! As Regional champion for 126 pounds, Susan’s son Ty went into the bracket strong, but unfortunately lost his match against a boy from El Paso. That sent him to the loser side of the bracket where he had to work his way back up to try for a spot at either 3rd or 5th place. He won his next two matches on day 1 to survive and make it to day 2.  On Day 2, he won his first match to make it to a chance at 3rd, but then oh no, was matched up again with the El Paso boy (who lost later on the winner side of the bracket) and Ty lost again to him (sadly!).  That put Ty in the match for 5th place but in the end, the other boy was able to score 2 points at the final buzzer to win. It was a very exciting couple of days and we are proud of Ty for finishing 6th in the state for 6A schools.  His goal this year was to get a medal at state so Praise the Lord he accomplished that!

天皇陛下は、2023年2月23日に63歳の誕生日を迎えました。先週の水曜日、日本国総領事　村林弘文氏はハイアット リージェンシーで、日本人コミュニティを集めて一緒にお祝いしました。招待いただき、感謝します。ヒューストン市の代表、グレッグ・アボット知事、テッド・クルーズ上院議員のようなさまざまなテキサス州上院議員のスピーチを聞くことができてとても光栄に思います。特にコロナ以降、このように集まる機会がほとんどなかったので、みんなでお祝いできてよかったです。天皇陛下、63回目のお誕生日おめでとうございます！

The Emperor of Japan celebrated his 63rd birthday on February 23, 2023 and here in Houston, the Japanese community celebrated with him! Thank you to the Consul General of Japan in Houston, Mr. Hirofumi Murabayashi, for hosting a beautiful reception at the Hyatt Regency last Wednesday. It was nice to hear the speeches from representatives of the City of Houston, Governor Greg Abbott, and various Texas Senators like Senator Ted Cruz. It was also nice to see leaders of the Japanese community come together for a social event, especially since we have had so few chances to see each other since COVID. Happy 63rd Birthday again to His Majesty the Emperor of Japan!

毎年ロデオの前に、3日間のBBQコンテストが行われます。参加カテゴリーは、ブリスケット、リブ、チキンの3つです。 2年前から、自由に参加可能な「オープン」部門も追加されました！焼きたてステーキの食べごたえを競う「KIDS」の新カテゴリーも登場！ 7 年前に始まった Wordl’s Championship BBQ Contestは世界からコンテンダーを呼び、「インターナショナル ヴィレッジ」を作成しました。コホートグループには、日本チームとイギリスから2チームが含まれていました。何年にもわたって成長を続け、今年は合計8チームが参加し、カナダから 2チーム、オーストラリアから2チーム、メキシコ、ブラジル、イギリス、そして日本から 1 チーム参加しました。日本チームの通訳として、スーザンと攻は毎日参加しお手伝い、そしてまりこも一緒にお手伝いしました。 2月23日（木）、日本チームShogunがパーティーを開催し、村林総領事と日本人コミュニティのリーダーたちを招待しました。BBQクックオフのコンセプトのお披露目、その後はみんなで歩き回って他250チームと交流することができてとても楽しかったです。日本チームの皆様、お疲れ様でした！ヒューストンに来てくれてありがとう、オースティン（彼らの次のクックオフ会場）でも頑張ってください！

Every year before before the rodeo, there is a 3 day BBQ Contest.  There are three categories to enter: brisket, ribs, and chicken.  Starting two years ago, there is also an “open” category where contestants can submit anything of their choice! There is also a new category for KIDS where kids can compete for the best cooked steak! Starting 7 years ago, the Wordl’s Championship BBQ Contest went global and started an “International Village”.  In the cohort group was Japan and two teams from England.  Over the years, the International Village has grown and grown and this year, there were 8 teams: two from Canada, two from Australia, and one team from Mexico, Brazil, UK, and Japan. As the interpreters for the Japan team, Susan and Koh were at the competition everyday to help support and Mariko was also there to take part in the action. On Thursday February 23, BBQ Shogun from Japan had a Japanese party and invited Consul General Murabayashi along with several leaders of the Japanese community.  It was so fun to show everyone the BBQ Cookoff concept and for everyone to be able to walk around and meet other some of the other 250 teams.
