Fukuoka-now.com/en/yamakasa/

The past two weeks had the Annoura Family all over everywhere! Zach is still in Japan (since June 3) and will stay there all the way until August 7. His big news is that he participated in Kodomo Yamakasa, a huge festival in Fukuoka that dates back 770+ years. Wow, very old traditional festival! The peak of the festival takes place on July 15 at 4:59am but all the preparations and practice begin on July 1. The kids version of the festival happens in early July. Zach was very excited to be a leader in his class and he got a good spot carrying the ‘yama’. Meanwhile, Koh flew to Japan on July 3 and will stay in Fukuoka with Zach until they both return together. Koh also participated in Yamakasa and one special thing about this time, is that he got to ride at the top of the ‘yama’ on one of the practice rounds with his family friend Kuchiishi san and Zach! For some extra info on the Hakata Gion Yamakasa festival, see here: https://www.fukuoka-now.com/en/yamakasa/

Joe is still on the west coast, staying at Susan’s cousin’s house in Thousand Oaks and doing his internship with Eugene’s investment banking company. He has made new friends and enjoys his side hustle of buying and selling unique treasurers he finds at thrift stores. He has become quite the specialist for vintage t-shirts, it seems! On the other side of the United States, Ty has made it through his first two weeks of ‘plebe summer’ at the U.S. Naval Academy. Susan was super happy to receive one letter from him and one phone call on July 7 for 30 minutes. Ty spoke of his rigid schedule, the abundant food, and several of the ups and downs he has endured. We are so proud of his dedication and motivation to hang in there and give it his best. In exciting news, Ty spoke to the wrestling coach, who said he could walk on to the wrestling team! We know this make Ty happiest of all.

Our second son Ty entered the U.S. Naval Academy on June 27, 2024. This day is called “I-Day” which is short for Induction Day. People who attend the Academy are called ‘midshipmen’ and first year midshipmen are called ‘plebes’. The Plebes begin their life at the Academy on I-Day, when their 7 weeks of hard training begins. They call this “Plebe Summer”. After Ty checked in at 7:15am, he turned in mountains of paperwork, got his hair buzzed off, was issued all his gear and uniforms and shoes, got fitted for glasses, and was assigned his dorm room inside the mighty Bancroft Hall. Bancroft Hall is a French designed dormitory, the largest in the world, and houses all 4,400 midshipmen. It has nearly 5 miles worth of hallways inside! Koh and Susan attended some tours, a parents briefing, a parents picnic, and a church service until the formal swearing in ceremony at 6pm. After the ceremony, we were able to see Ty in uniform for about 30 minutes before he had to report back to Bancroft Hall, where all 1,187 plebes marched back in and the two big wooden doors were slammed shut (according to tradition). The Class of 2028 had 15,146 applicants and this year’s class size was 1,170 + 17 International. 69% are male and 31% are female. Ty will get two phone calls to us in the next 6 weeks and we will get to see him during Plebe Parents Weekend, August 9-11. Until then, we will write him letters and pray that all goes well for him and his new classmates!

The big news in the Annoura family is that Ty went into the U.S. Naval Academy on June 27. Details of that experience warranted its own article in this week’s newsletter! As a parent, Koh and I are of course proud of him for getting accepted, but we are also sad that he has left us. As much as people say it’s normal to grow up and leave home at 18, having our family count go to three (from five) is going to be a whole new dynamic. Right before Ty entered the Academy, we allowed him to go on a trip to Japan with three of his good friends: Jack, Zayan, and Addison. The four of them flew into Narita, bought a JR Rail Pass, and traveled all throughout Tokyo, Hakone, Kyoto, Osaka, and Fukuoka. Seeing some of the pictures, I know they had an incredible trip and made many lifelong memories. I’m actually writing today’s newsletter on an airplane, as Koh and I fly back from Annapolis. I am wondering how we will feel in the coming days and weeks; my emotions are all over the place. After leaving Ty, we decided to stay in Maryland for a couple extra days. We drove west and found a historical town called Frostburg. There is a company called Tracks and Yaks that runs rail cycle/kayak activities. It is something I have always wanted to try and it was just what we needed to get over some of our sad feelings and reset our minds. Lots of changes on the horizon with Koh leaving for Japan this week (July 3) to join Zach. He’s spoken to the Hakata Elementary School PTA to allow him to help out with Kodomo Yamakasa, an annual festival for kids in his hometown. Meanwhile, Zach is enjoying his time in Japan, still attending school and living his best life. He posted up a video of him enjoying “Shine Muscat” grapes that he bought for a whopping $15 (Zach!). Over in Los Angeles, Joe is plugging away at his investment banking internship. Last week, the team started meeting a few times a week at a spot inside UCLA. On the weekends, Joe has been enjoying his newest past time of thrifting, hitting the Goodwill bins, garage sales, and estate sales. This past weekend, he actually sold some of his treasured finds at a flea market he said, splitting the booth with a couple of new friends he has recently made. Oh the life of young people!

How much can a family do in two weeks? A LOT!! At the time of our last newsletter launch, we had just wrapped up the school year. With Zach scheduled to leave for Japan on June 3 and Joe needing to be in Los Angeles for his summer internship, we squeezed in a double header party on June 2. First it was Zach’s 12th birthday party and then right after that was Ty’s graduation party. After the last guest left at 12am midnight, we rush cleaned the whole house, packed our bags, and got up early the next day to bring Zach to the airport. Every summer, Zach goes to Fukuoka to visit his Japanese grandparents, attend Hakata Elementary School, and to participate in the traditional Japanese festival Yamakasa. We are proud of him for flying all the way there (with a stopover in Tokyo) by himself! After dropping him, Koh, Susan, Joe, and Ty made a mad dash across half the United States to California, BY CAR! It took one full day to get through Texas, but we made it to El Paso by the end of the night, then to Thousand Oaks by 1am the following day. Joe settled into Susan’s cousin’s house (thanks Jennifer and Eric!) and the other 3 of us went sightseeing to Ojai and Santa Barbara. We met up with Joe’s boss, Eugene Izumo, a friend of Susan’s from USJC, who recently left his big Investment Banking firm to form his own IB Startup. Lunch with Eugene at Eataly in Century City was an unforgettable experience! The family also had time to meet up with Susan’s former business partner Matt Takahashi and to enjoy some time with Susan’s cousin’s family before saying bye to Joe and flying back to Houston Saturday afternoon. A few hours later, Susan and Koh re-packed their bags and flew off to Aruba to celebrate their 30th wedding anniversary. Highlights included an all day tour on a 10 passenger open air jeep, snorkeling at several pristine reefs, a private Seabob tour to see the turtles, and just spending some good quality time with each other. 30 years is a very long time when your 52. Happy Anniversary to us! Last week, the Annoura family was all over the world with us parents in Aruba, Zach in Japan, Joe in Los Angeles, and even Ty hopped on a plane with 3 of his friends and flew to Tokyo. This is probably the busiest, craziest travel summer we’ve ever had and it’s only just beginning!

We have some super exciting Annoura Family news to report, finally!! Our middle son Ty, found out last week that he was admitted to the United States Naval Academy!! This was his #1 choice for college and we are super, super proud of him. We are so thankful to Senator Cruz for his nomination, to all of his teachers and coaches for their recommendation letters, his boy scout Troop 1513, his Clear Lake High School teachers, his Gateway Community Church leaders, and the moral support and prayers of his friends and family! Before we found out, we planned a trip to Boston and Cleveland to visit Worcester Polytechnic Institute and Case Western Reserve University, two universities Ty was considering going to, to wrestle on their wrestling teams. Over 55 hours, Susan and Ty flew through 5 different cities and met the coaches and teammates for both schools last weekend. They then learned Ty was accepted to the Naval Academy! On the other side of the world, Koh spent a couple weeks in Korea and Japan and returned home last Wednesday. In Korea, he did his time trials for the upcoming Keirin racing league, Derby Wheel and did great! In Japan, he met with his parents and the builder of our new home. Joe came back to Houston, but only to grab his snowboarding stuff, and to head to Bush Airport. One of his fraternity brothers has a house in Park City, Utah, so lucky Joe got to go snowboarding with a small group of friends. Susan spent a couple of days in Galveston as part of HAR’s executive committee, supporting the next group of HAR leaders on their TRLP journey. This week, she is in Scottsdale, AZ for her first T3 Summit (www.t3summit.com), also with her HAR EC. It’s going to be a busy next few weeks because Koh takes off for Belgium this weekend to coach his paracyclist athlete on another European racing tour! As if this isn’t enough Annoura traveling, Ty will also hit the road. He heads to Las Vegas tomorrow to compete in a national wrestling tournament with his club coach. A special thanks to Sue’s parents who will watch Zach while everyone is hustling around!
