The U.S. Japan Council’s mission is to cultivate and connect leaders at every level in the United States and Japan who are committed to strengthening our global partnership. Every year, members from both countries get together at an annual conference and this year, the conference was held at the Cerulean Tower in Shibuya on October 14-15. Susan and several members from Houston including Donna Cole and Robert Gondo attended. The theme this year was “Visionaries at the Helm: Advancing the U.S.-Japan Strategic Alliance.” Leaders from both nations discussed the future of global security, economic resilience, and cross-border innovation. It was nice to see so many friends and to also make many new friends. Members day emphasized the Japanese concept of “Go En” helping us to remember that magic of meeting people in our lives and how they can make a significant impact later. The conference had a record 800+ attendees with a very impressive speaker list. See details here: https://www.usjapancouncil.org/annual-conference/

The Emperor of Japan, Naruhito, marked his 65th birthday in Tokyo yesterday, addressing a large crowd from the balcony of the Imperial Palace. He stressed the importance of telling the tragedy of World War II to younger generations before the stories fade away from memory. This year marks the 80th anniversary of the war’s end, and many of the people involved directly in the war have grown older or have passed away, making it difficult for the younger generation to hear their firsthand stories. Naruhito was accompanied by his wife, Empress Masako, their daughter Princess Aiko and some of his younger brother’s family.

Around the world, Japanese Consulates and Embassies also celebrated the Emperor’s birthday. Here in Houston, Consul General Zentaro Naganuma held a beautiful reception at his official residence in River Oaks, inviting friends and members of the Japanese community, including Annoura Realty Group’s Susan and Mariko! It ws so nice to see the staff of the Consulate (our friends and clients) as well as colleagues and USJC friends like Donna Cole, Kathy and Robert Gondo, Akemi Saitoh, and Steve Sakanishi. Good times!

  • JASH BASH 2024

JASH BASH 2024 took place December 19 at the Bayou Music Center. JASH stands for the Japan-America Society Houston. They are the leading organization that connects Houston’s diverse community, local businesses, and individuals to advance the mutual interest of American and Japanese people. At this year’s JASH BASH, there was a special performance by two members of the Houston Ballet! One was Yuriko Kajiya, who we watched in Tokyo two years ago with the Mayor of Houston’s entourage. She was also award the J. Thomas Schieffer Leadership Award at this year’s JASH BASH. Dr. Bradley Bailey was the winner of the Houston-Japan Friendship Award. Thank you to the Gondo Family who invited Koh and I to sit at their table and enjoy the night’s festivities.

Every year, the United State Japan Council holds an annual conference. The venue alternates between Tokyo and Washington DC. This year, the conference was in Tokyo, and Susan attended it with a small Houston delegation of Donna Cole and Robert Gondo. The mission of the USJC is to strengthen ties between the United States and Japan by building a community of leaders across cultures, sectors, and generations.  Another mission is to grow Japanese American leaders to be active in the international arena, which someday we hope our kids will aspire to do. The conference was held inside the Cerulean Tower in Shibuya. Things kicked off with some intimate networking dinners, where small groups of attendees could choose the type of food and budget they wanted to spend. Susan and Donna chose to dine with Shinetsu CEO Mr. Saitoh and his wife Akemi and a small group of people at the new Azabudai Hills restaurant dining 33.  The food was great and the view was spectacular, with direct views of the picturesque Tokyo Tower. Conference in the daytime, meetings with different Annoura Realty investors  every night! When the conference was over, Susan took a quick trip to Fukuoka to see Koh’s parents and to meet the builders of our new house being built in Narayamachi. Things are moving fast and the house is expected to be done in January 2025!
