Feb 23 was the birthday of the Emperor of Japan, His Majesty Naruhito. Did you know that in Japan, the birthday of the Emperor is a public holiday?  There is always a big ceremony open to the public at the Emperial Palace in Tokyo. Here in Houston, the Government of Japan had their own celebration, which took place at the Consul General of Japan’s private residence in River Oaks. It was so nice to see Mr. and Mrs. Murabayashi along with many of our Government of Japan clients who we helped find housing for in the past year. Wives were dressed in formal kimonos and the Japanese national anthem was played as the Consul General raised the Japanese flag. There was a delicious spread of Japanese food and desserts and it was fun to see many friends and colleagues in attendance. On a side note, Consul General Murabayashi announced his retirement from public service, adding that he would be leaving his Houston post in March. We are so sad to see him go and really appreciate the chance he gave Annoura Realty Group to sell the Japanese Government’s former official residence. He mentioned it was one of his biggest accomplishments while serving in Houston and that really made me feel happy. Good luck, Mr. Murabayashi and Aurora san on the next chapter of your lives!

This is the season for conferences! Not only was the NAR National Conference last week, but two days before that was the USJC Annual Conference. The mission of USJC is to develop and connect global leaders to create a stronger U.S.-Japan relationship. It is an organization whose members believe people-to-people relationships are a powerful way to bring together leaders in the U.S. and Japan to address and create solutions to mutual concerns. From Houston, Susan met up with Glen and Robert Gondo, Donna Cole, and Akemi Saitoh in Washington DC. It was three days of great networking across all industries: politics, health care, health tech, education, banking, etc. USJC brought in some great speakers and conducted several break out discussions for all to consider. DC had great food and great weather and Susan was even able to sneak out for a quick peak at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery. Looking forward to next year’s convention when it will move back to Japan and be held at the Cerulean Tower in Shibuya!

Every year, Japan-America Society of Houston (JASH) celebrates a renewed hope and a steadfast commitment to connect Houston’s diverse community, local businesses, and individuals to advance the mutual interest of American and Japanese people.  This year, JASH celebrated its 55th anniversary with a spotlight on Mexico! At the entrance was a festive mariachi band, and on the menu was collaborative dishes by two of Houston’s top chefs: Hugo Ortega (executive chef/co-owner of five of Houston’s top restaurants – Backstreet Cafe, Hugo’s, Caracol, Xochi and URBE, and winner of Best Chef: Southwest at the prestigious 2017 James Beard Foundation Awards) and Manabu Horiuchi (four-time James Beard Award nominee and Executive Chef at award-winning Kata Robata and soon-to-open Katami).

This year’s JASH BASH 2023 celebration took place on Tuesday, October 24, at BAYOU MUSIC CENTER. Susan and Koh were honored to be invited by Glen and Kathy Gondo and it was so much fun seeing so many Japanese community leaders out an about. Kanpai!

The Emperor of Japan celebrated his 63rd birthday on February 23, 2023 and here in Houston, the Japanese community celebrated with him! Thank you to the Consul General of Japan in Houston, Mr. Hirofumi Murabayashi, for hosting a beautiful reception at the Hyatt Regency last Wednesday. It was nice to hear the speeches from representatives of the City of Houston, Governor Greg Abbott, and various Texas Senators like Senator Ted Cruz. It was also nice to see leaders of the Japanese community come together for a social event, especially since we have had so few chances to see each other since COVID. Happy 63rd Birthday again to His Majesty the Emperor of Japan!

Last Tuesday was the annual JASH BASH. The Japanese American Society of Houston celebrated their 54th anniversary of fostering strong relations and frinedships between Houston and Japan. Last year the event was held at Toyota Center, home of the Rockets. This year, the event was held at Minute Maid Park, home of the Houston Astros! It was very neat taking the tour and going down on the field to walk around the actual field where the Astros won the World Series a couple weeks before! Silent auction items included high end Japanese whiskeys and famous Japanese baseball players’ memorabilia. Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner won an award as did Maanori “Mashi” Murakami, Major League Baseball’s first ever Japanese professional baseball player. It was quite the reunion of the recent Trade Mission delegation members- people from the City of Houston, Greater Houston Partnership, and local Japanese business owners. Also in attendance were representatives from most major Japanese companies with a presence in Houston. A special thanks to Kathy and Glen Gondo for inviting Koh and I to sit at their table for this super special event!
