    BBQ Cookoff

    The annual BBQ Cookoff took place over this past weekend. For the first time in maybe 10 years, Susan did not go volunteer at the International Village because the team from Japan, BBQ Shogun, was not invited this time. Instead, we went as regular people to actually ENJOY the BBQ Cookoff! Susan went on two days, Friday and Saturday, and brought along many friends to experience the super fun atmosphere. Having many friends and colleagues with private tents, they were able to bounce around from place to place and enjoy the BBQ, music, and dancing. They were also able to stop by the International Village and say hello to the many different countries participating this year. 

    This event is touted as the World’s Largest BBQ competition and the cooks are SERIOUS!  They compete in several categories including brisket, chicken, ribs, and dessert.  Here is a complete list of the winners:

    毎年恒例のBBQクックオフが先週末に開催されました。今回は日本からのチーム、BBQ Shogun が招待されなかったため、スーザンは約10 年ぶりにボランティアに行きませんでした。代わりに、私たちは一般人として実際にBBQクックオフを楽しみに行きました！スーザンは金曜と土曜の二日間、たくさんの友達を連れてとても良い経験となりました。プライベートテントを持った友人や同僚がたくさんいたので、いろいろなテントに行き、バーベキュー、音楽、ダンスを楽しむことができ、国際村に立ち寄り、今年参加する多くの国々に挨拶することができました。

    このイベントは世界最大のバーベキュー大会であり、料理人たちは必死に戦います。彼らはブリスケット、チキン、リブ、デザートなどのいくつかのカテゴリーで競い合い、今年の受賞者のリストを以下よりご覧ください！

    攻はオーストラリアから帰国し、 4 日間ヒューストンに滞在し、再び遠征に向かいました。 プロのパラサイクリスト選手である菅野氏は、アデレードでのレースを終え、一度日本に帰国し、その後フロリダへ向かいました。 攻は先週、ヒューストンからゲインズビルまでトラックを運転して行きました。 二人はフロリダで2週間トレーニングし、USAパラサイクリングレース、別名スワンプクラシックに出場する予定です。 スーザンは他の数人の両親とともにテキサス州ウィチタフォールズまで片道7時間運転し、泰とチームメイトが参戦するテキサス州立デュアルズを観戦しに行きました。ちなみに、ウィチタフォールズでは、デルタホテルズバイマリオットホテルと、ダウンタウンのレストラン、ハイランダーパブリックハウスへぜひ訪れてみてください。 クリア レイク高校 は 16 チーム中 9位の結果となりましたが、各試合では多くのケイティ チームと対戦し、なぜ遠征する必要があったのかなと不思議に思いました。笑 更に、先週の水曜日にはシニアナイトが開催され、このイベントでは、写真やスピーチで卒業する生徒たちをハイライトし、保護者のための夕食会も開催されます。 1月20日に 82 歳の誕生日を迎えた攻のお母さんに特別なエールを送ります。

    Koh returned home from Australia, but only for 4 days!  His professional paracyclist athlete, Mr. Kanno, finished his racing in Adelaide, went home one time to Japan, then turned around and flew to Florida. Koh drove his truck from Houston to Gainesville to meet him last week. The pair will spend two weeks in Florida training and competing in hte USA ParaCycling Race, aka the Swamp Classic. With Koh in Australia, Susan traveled to Wichita Falls, TX with a few other parents to watch Ty and his teammates wrestle at the Texas State Duals. It was a long 7 hour drive EACH WAY to watch one full day of wrestling. By the way, if you ever have to go to Wichita Falls, I do highly recommend the hotel called Delta Hotels by Marriott and the downtown restaurant called The Highlander Public House. Clear Lake HS wrestling took 9th place out of 16 teams, but competed against many Katy teams, making us all wonder why we drove so far to compete (lol). In other news about Ty, last Wednesday was his Senior Night at CLHS. This event highlights all the graduating seniors with pictures and speeches, and a dinner for the parents. A special shout out to Koh’s mom, who celebrated her 82nd birthday on January 20!

  • ロデオ BBQ クラス

    ヒューストン ロデオが近づいており、国際委員会への資金を集めるために、2023 年 12 月 18 日にミズーリ市のデニスとアリシアの家で BBQ 101 イベントが開催されました。このお家は広いエーカーの敷地にあり、パーティーが開催された大きな「パーティー納屋」があります。巨大なバーベキューピットが搬入され、会長のランディ・ポーリーを含む数人のバーベキュー専門家が、バーベキューの方法やお気に入りのレシピについての短い教育セミナーを開催しました。天候にも恵まれ、参加者は素晴らしい時間を過ごしました。参加してくれた皆さん、そして主催してくれたデニスとアリシア、ありがとうございました！

    The Houston Rodeo is around the corner and to raise money for the international committee, there was a BBQ 101 event held on Dec 18, 2023 at Dennis and Alicia’s house in Missouri City. The house sits on a large acre lot and has a big ‘party barn’ where the party was held. Huge BBQ pits were brought in and several BBQ specialists including our chairman Randy Pauly, held some short educational seminars on how to BBQ and some of their favorite recipes. The weather was perfect and the attendees had a wonderful time. Thank you to everyone who attended and to Dennis and Alicia for hosting!

  • クリアレイク杯 チャンピオン – 居酒屋 和

    2023年 12月3日、NASA 敷地内のギルルース フィールドで、毎年恒例のクリア レイク カップ ソフトボール トーナメントが開催されました。スーザンとミックは居酒屋 和というチームの一員で、私たちはクリアレイクの多くのチームと対戦しました。最初の試合はカネカとの試合、２試合目はJAXA（十数人の三菱重工の選手）との試合、そして３試合目はクリアレイクユナイテッドとの試合でした。どの試合も興奮するものとなりましたが、クリア レイク ユナイテッドとの試合に最も苦戦しました。チーム居酒屋 和とクリアレイクユナイテッドは第3試合まで両者無敗でした。結果、優勝したのはチーム居酒屋 和でした！チームと一緒に楽しい時間を過ごすことができてとても楽しかったですが、翌日は全身筋肉痛でほとんど動くことができませんでした。個人では第3戦では1安打を放ち、スコアを取ることが出来たのでとてもうれしかったです。 4月には大きな JBAH ソフトボールトーナメントが近づいています。参加されたチームの皆様、お疲れ様でした！

    Dec 3, 2023 at the Gilruth Field inside the NASA compound, the annual Clear Lake Cup softball tournament took place. Susan and Mik play on the team Izakaya Wa and we played against many of the teams from Clear Lake. Our first game was against Kaneka, our second game was against JAXA (plus some MHI players), and our third game was against Clear Lake United. All the games were exciting with Clear Lake United being the most difficult. Going into the third game, both Team Izakaya Wa and Clear Lake United were undefeated. In the end, it was Team Izakaya Wa that won! It was so fun to get together with our team on a beautiful autumn day, though the next day, all my muscles are sore and I can barely move! I was super happy to have one hit and to make it around the bases in game 3 to score a point.  HAAAAA!  The big JBAH softball tournament is around the corner probably in April. To everyone who participated, otsukaresama deshita!

    ヒューストン日米協会（JASH）は毎年、ヒューストンの地元企業と日本企業を結びつけ、アメリカ人と日本人の相互の利益を促進するという新たな希望と確固たる取り組みをお祝いします。今年、JASH はメキシコにスポットライトを当てて 55 周年を祝いました。入り口には陽気なマリアッチバンドがあり、メニューにはヒューストンのトップシェフ2人によるコラボ料理が並びました。ヒューゴ・オルテガ（ヒューストンのトップレストラン5軒、バックストリート・カフェ、ヒューゴズ、カラコル、ソチ、ウルブのエグゼクティブシェフ兼共同オーナー）名誉ある2017年ジェームズ・ビアード財団賞で南西部最優秀シェフ賞を受賞）と堀内学氏（ジェームズ・ビアード賞に4回ノミネートされ、受賞歴のあるKata Robataと近々オープンするKatamiの総料理長）。

    今年の JASH BASH 2023 祝賀会は、10 月 24 日火曜日、BAYOU MUSIC CENTER で開催されました。スーザンと攻は、グレン ゴンドウとキャシー ゴンドウに招待されました。たくさんの日本のコミュニティ リーダーに会えてとても楽しかったです。

    Every year, Japan-America Society of Houston (JASH) celebrates a renewed hope and a steadfast commitment to connect Houston’s diverse community, local businesses, and individuals to advance the mutual interest of American and Japanese people.  This year, JASH celebrated its 55th anniversary with a spotlight on Mexico! At the entrance was a festive mariachi band, and on the menu was collaborative dishes by two of Houston’s top chefs: Hugo Ortega (executive chef/co-owner of five of Houston’s top restaurants – Backstreet Cafe, Hugo’s, Caracol, Xochi and URBE, and winner of Best Chef: Southwest at the prestigious 2017 James Beard Foundation Awards) and Manabu Horiuchi (four-time James Beard Award nominee and Executive Chef at award-winning Kata Robata and soon-to-open Katami).

    This year’s JASH BASH 2023 celebration took place on Tuesday, October 24, at BAYOU MUSIC CENTER. Susan and Koh were honored to be invited by Glen and Kathy Gondo and it was so much fun seeing so many Japanese community leaders out an about. Kanpai!
