A major storm hit Houston on Thursday May 16 resulting in extreme destruction, power outages, and four deaths. Winds blew up to 100 mph and a tornado came through the city, damaging several skyscrapers in downtown and uprooting trees all over Houston. The aftermath of cleaning up the city has been very hard with hundreds of thousands of people still without power even today. High temperatures in the 90s are expected and many are without air conditioning and refrigeration for their food. In the Memorial area, many of the gas stations were closed, sending people scrambling to fill their cars (including Susan!). Many schools were closed last Friday in HISD and Katy ISD. If you or someone you know is in need of help, let’s help each other! Please reach out to us if there is anything we can do to help: 832-725-7880 Susan or 832-729-8829 Mariko. Luckily in the Clear Lake area, we survived fairly untouched- never lost power nor internet. Praise the Lord!

We normally have our ‘uchiage/hanseikai’ party right after our softball tournament ends, but this time because of scheduling issues, we waited a few weeks. I was supposed to be in Fort Worth with Ty for a wrestling tournament but when that plan got cancelled, I was free to go to this dinner with my softball team afterall! I always look forward to not only eating at Izakaya Wa, but also being able to chat with my fellow moms and teammates. It’s funny that everyone on our team brought their sons so there were our 3, the Asanos 2, the Tanakas 2, and the Osakos 2… 9 boys at their own table, that was actually more than the moms table! We chatted over our recent news, reviewed what happened at our last softball game, and enjoyed all our favorite items on the menu. Its always helpful when the owners are at your table! Thank you, Asano family for a great meal and hope our Team Izakaya Wa can do better next year!

  • The Eclipse!

    The Eclipse!

April 8 was a special day in Texas as most major cities were able to experience the solar eclipse. CCISD was actually off from school so Ty hit the road to Austin with his friends, while Susan and Zach stayed home to watch it from our front yard. We dragged out our zero gravity chairs, mixed some cocktails (non-alcohol for him of course), fixed some snacks, and reclined all the way back. Although it was pretty cloudy, we were able to catch the entire show, on and off through the clouds, and with and without our eclipse glasses. Some places in Texas were fortunate to have good weather and got to see the very rare total solar eclipse and the famous ring of fire. I am so glad I was able to experience the eclipse with Zach this time, because the next total solar eclipse that can be seen from the United States will be August 23, 2044, which is over 20 years from now. I hope that Zach and I will be able to see it again together. He’ll be 31 and yikes, I’ll be 72!

The Houston Chronicle reports that the population in Houston has spiked in recent years, leaving popular cities like New York City, Los Angeles, and Chicago. Here are some interesting takeaways from the article:

    • The Houston metro area, encompassing 10 counties with over 7.5 million people, saw a population increase of nearly 140,000 between July 2022 and July 2023.
    • This growth rate in Houston translates to a new resident approximately every four minutes, making it the second largest gain in the U.S. after Dallas.
    • In contrast, the country’s three largest metros—New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago—experienced population losses.
    • The Houston area has regained over 150% of the jobs it lost during the pandemic, indicating a recovery plus a 50% increase in pre-pandemic job numbers.
    • Metro areas such as Chicago and San Francisco have not yet regained all the jobs lost due to the pandemic, while New York has only just managed to recover its lost jobs.
    • Harris County, within the Houston metro, saw nearly 42,000 international migrants in the year, the highest since at least 2016 and the second highest in the U.S. after Miami-Dade County.
    • International migration was the primary driver of population growth in Houston, accounting for nearly 40% of its total growth last year.
    • Harris County also experienced the largest natural population increase in the U.S., with approximately 35,000 more births than deaths during this period.

A quick recommendation for you if you are looking for a weekend road trip! While on our family bluebonnet hunt, we stumbled upon a beautiful vineyard and winery near Marble Falls called Perissos (https://www.perissosvineyards.com/). Perissos is a Greek word found in the Bible (Ephesians 3:20) meaning “exceeding abundantly, beyond what is expected, imagined, or hoped for.”  What a great meaning! The grounds were beautiful and there was a tasting option that for $24, you can have a pour of 6 of their current wines. No reservations were needed. There was a big tasting room (beautiful) or you could opt to sit outdoors at one of their many picnic tables. The weather was nice so we decided to sit outside overlooking the vineyard. There is also a nice menu where you can order charcuterie, salads, or sandwiches. We went for a small charcuterie! It was a nice little afternoon and highly recommended if you want to just get away for a day!
